Eqtidaar: the 16th individual Group 1 winner by Invincible Spirit

Exciting young sprinter Eqtidaar stepped into the big time on Friday when striking in decisive style under Jim Crowley to land the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

The son of Invincible Spirit follows in the footsteps of Muhaarar, who also carried the colours of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum to land the inaugural running of the race in 2015.

Eqtidaar’s time was only a fraction shy of Muhaarar’s race-record figure, coming in at 1m 12.12s compared to 1m 12.05s.

Like Muhaarar, Eqtidaar was bred by Sheikh Hamdan. He is the third foal out of the dual-winning Acclamation mare Madany, who is also responsible for Group 2 Hungerford Stakes scorer and dual Group 1 runner-up Massaat (Teofilo).

Madany, who is a half-sister to Listed-winning sprinter Zeiting, delivered a colt by Muhaarar this year and is in foal to Frankel.

Eqtidaar is trained by Sir Michael Stoute and like so many of the inmates at Freemason Lodge Stables he has improved with time. He struck on his debut at two before finishing fourth in the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes.

He made his seasonal reappearance this year at Ascot, chasing home Invincible Army, who won the Sirenia Stakes, in the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes before finishing fourth in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes, when he was inconvenienced by the draw.

Eqtidaar could now take the same route as Muhaarar and line up in next month's July Cup at Newmarket.
