Muhaarar: champion sprinter looks to have sired a potential star

The highly anticipated first crop of Shadwell’s star sprinter MUHAARAR produced its first winner on Wednesday when the Roger Varian-trained RAHEEQ struck in a 5½f Fillies' Novice Stakes at Bath.

Ridden just off the pace, the speedy looking juvenile was asked for her effort over a furlong out before readily pulling clear to win by an impressive four and a half lengths, following which jockey Jim Crowley said: “She’s a filly we’ve always liked and she was very professional. She has lots of speed and is potentially smart.”

The Shadwell-bred and –owned filly is the sixth foal out of SHIMAH, who was a high-class two-year-old for Kevin Prendergast, winning the Listed Saoire Stakes over 6f before finishing a close second to AGAIN in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. The STORM CAT mare has thrived in her second career at stud, producing several smart performers, including MUSHIR – a talented sprinting son of OASIS DREAM – and the 95-rated DAWN APPROACH filly MOGHAMARAH.

The 13-year-old SHIMAH has a KINGMAN yearling filly and a MUHAARAR colt foal on the ground.

RAHEEQ is one of 105 first-crop two-year-olds by MUHAARAR, who has a host of exciting juveniles set to represent him in the coming days, headed by the William Haggas-trained ORIBI at Newmarket on Friday.

The first yearlings by MUHAARAR averaged more than six times his £30,000 fee last year, with a high of 925,000gns and a further 28 making 100,000gns or more. He was the leading first-crop sire at both Tattersalls Book 1 and the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in 2018.

MUHAARAR, who is the highest rated son of OASIS DREAM, covered a stellar book of 129 mares during his first season at stud in 2016, of which 72 were black type performers, 54 were black type winners and 31 were Group winners. Mares included Shadwell’s Classic heroine GHANAATI and RIFQAH, dam of high-class sprinter MUSTAJEEB.

MUHAARAR, who was crowned European champion sprinter in 2015 following four wins at the highest level, covered a full book of mares for the fourth consecutive season in 2019.
