First Northern Hemisphere Gr.1 winner for MUJAHID

Shadwell Stud’s Italian based sire MUJAHID has added another accolade to his already impressive resume.

CLEO FAN (Mujahid x Cuprea) became his sire’s first Northern Hemisphere Gr.1 winner on Sunday 10th May at Capannelle Racecourse, Rome when winning the Premio Presidente della Repubblica by a neck.
CLEO FAN had previously been placed in a Gr.1 event when running second to PRIORE PHILIP in the Premio Roma in 2014. He capitalised on his experience of the course and obviously had some energy in reserve to compete the 2000m racing in 1.59.5 and fend off a decisive offensive from MAGIC ARTIST.

Jockey Umberto Rispoli told reporters after the race:

“Stefano Botti [trainer] was confident and told me to ride positively. I pushed a bit to hit the front but Cleo Fan responded well to my urgings. I realised that Priore was in trouble and my horse built up a good lead. I saw on the screen that Magic Artist was coming but Cleo Fan is a game horse and he fought bravely.”
CLEO FAN, who carries the silks of the Botti family’s Dioscuri, was bred by Giuliano Fantini who has just four broodmares, all bred to Italian-based sires, and CLEO FAN is his first Group winner. The colt is the third foal and winner out of CUPREA (Best Of The Best), a fair race mare who has since died. Fanti has retained as broodmare her five-year-old daughter CATNIP FAN (Johnny Red Kerr).

MUJAHID (Danzig x Elrafa Ah) is managed by Paolo Crespi and his team at Allevamento di Besnate. He has been Leading Italian Based Sire for 3 consecutive years (2012, 2013 and 2014) and consistently covers one of the largest books of mares in Italy.
