Kutub: the son of In The Wings won three Group 1 races

Multiple Group 1 winner KUTUB died recently due to the infirmities of old age. He was 22.

The son of IN THE WINGS began his career with Shadwell and Freddy Head but was transferred to the Godolphin stable of Saeed bin Suroor at the beginning of his four-year-old season.

KUTUB carried the famous Godolphin silks to a hat-trick of top-level wins across Europe, with two of those victories coming in Germany - in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich and the Deutsche Post Euro Express Preis von Europa at Cologne – and the other in Italy, where he struck at San Siro in the Gran Premio del Jockey Club.

Bred by the exors of Mrs E M Burke and Airlie Stud, KUTUB retired having won six races and more than £750,000 in prize-money.

He began his stud career in France at Haras du Thenney before stints at Clongiffen Stud in Ireland and Batsford Stud in Britain. He spent his final years covering at Girsonfield Stud before returning to Shadwell last year.

KUTUB’S leading lights on the Flat are headed by FILIOS, who was a talented handicapper for Luca Cumani, but it was as a jumps stallion that he made his name during the latter part of his stud career, producing the likes of NOTUS DE LA TOUR and KATACHENKO, a Grade 3-winning chaser for Donald McCain.
