Nayef: regally-bred son on Gulch is making his mark as a broodmare sire

NAYEF is nowadays an elder statesmen at Nunnery Stud, having covered his 16th book of mares here at the age of 21 this year.

The brilliant four-time Group 1 winner may be approaching his twilight years but he is still making his presence felt on the racecourse and he has been in particularly fine form of late as a broodmare sire.

In recent weeks his daughters have featured as dams of:

  • SIMPLY BREATHLESS, Neil Drysdale's four-year-old filly who defeated subsequent Grade 1 winner Ollie's Candy to land the Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes at Santa Anita for Cloros Bloodstock. Her dam is Darling Grace, a winning half-sister to Listed-placed Glencadam Glory.
  • ONLY TIME, a two-year-old colt saddled by Alessandro Botti who won the Listed Premio Giuseppe de Montel at San Siro. He is out of Young Americans, a winning half-sister to the prolific Regarde Moi.
  • COBRA EYE, a two-year-old colt trained by John Quinn for Phoenix Thoroughbreds who flew home in taking style to score in a valuable maiden at Glorious Goodwood. His dam is Annie The Doc,who has also produced Listed winners Biraaj and Lida.
  • ENCIPHER, a two-year-old colt who represented John Gosden and Godolphin when he eased to a two-and-a-quarter-length success in a Newbury novice stakes second time out. He is out of Ennaya, a half-sister to Classic heroine Ervedya.
  • LEKHIN, who took a maiden over seven and a half furlongs at Varese in Italy for owner and breeder Grizzetti Galoppo. The two-year-old colt is out of Lakshimi, a half-sister to Group 3 scorer Lokaloka.
  • MONAAFASAH, a three-year-old filly bred and raced by Shadwell and trained by Marcus Tregoning, and a seven-length Bath maiden winner on her second run. She is out of Salhooda, a winning daughter of Falmouth Stakes scorer Alshakr.
  • MUTAMAASIK, another Shadwell homebred three-year-old who took a Wolverhampton novice stakes by clear water for Roger Varian. He is out of Muhawalah, a winning full-sister to dual Group 1 victor Tamayuz.
  • ONE VOICE, a two-year-old filly sent out by Jessica Harrington to win a competitive Leopardstown auction maiden eased down by three lengths on her second start. She is out of Zaaqya, a winning relation to Group 1 scorer Imperial Dancer.

The month of July also brought triumphs in hot handicaps for NAYEF'S maternal grandchildren AKWAAN, MINNIE HAHA and RAPHAEL.

The above named winners are by a wide range of sires and many were conceived at relatively inexpensive fees, which suggests NAYEF is an improving element in a pedigree. That should be no surprise considering his own outstanding pedigree, as a son of GULCH and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan's influential broodmare HEIGHT OF FASHION, also dam of the great NASHWAN and UNFUWAIN.
