Shadwell Estate Company Ltd and the Dubai International Arabian Races have been involved Thoroughbred and Arabian racing in South America for some time. The purpose of the trip in January 2015 was to renew contacts with members of the racing industry in both Chile and Uruguay and to visit Shadwell’s 2 Thoroughbred Stallions resident in South America.
First port of call for Stud Director, Richard Lancaster, visited G.r1 Middle Park Stakes winner AWZAAN at Haras Cuatro Piedras, Uruguay. “He looked in terrific shape and the Salomones are delighted with the yearlings and foals they have on the farm. He is definitely stamping his stock and at this stage they look as if they will be extremely strong. Rather in his mould so hopefully they will come to hand early like the sire” commented Richard.
On Tuesday 6th January, Shadwell sponsored a Throughbred race and Dubai International Arabian Races sponsored a Purebred Arabian race at the Hippodromo Nacional de Maronas. The Gran Premio Ciudad de Montevideo (the Arabian race) proved extremely popular with 12 runners. As Arabian racing is in its infancy in Uruguay, the turnout was extremely good with the horses having been in training for 2 months for the race. They had been very well prepared; all perfectly behaved at the start and they jumped off with no problem at all.
The winner SACRISTY came from Haras Baraka, a large Arabian breeding operation who has had horses in UK in the past. There was a great deal of enthusiasm about the whole race.
Our Thoroughbred sponsored race, the Premio Copa Shadwell, is the main supporting race for the Gran Premio Jose Pedro Ramirez (Gr.1) - the equivalent of the Arc De Triomphe in Uruguay. It was fought out by the two top fillies in Uruguay at the moment. The Shadwell race attracted 15 runners.
In Chile, Shadwell representatives visited ASHAAQ at Haras Santa Monica near Santiago. ASHAAQ again has proved popular with breeders in Chile. He was a three time winner in France for trainer Freddy Head before heading to South America to take up stud duties.
Again Shadwell and Dubai International Arabian races teamed up in Santiago to support Chilean racing on 9th January at the Club Hipico de Santiago. The Thoroughbred race, the Copa Shadwell was a race for 3 year olds and upwards over 1,200 metres. It was won by number 6, BOTELLON (pictured), a previous winner over 1,000 metres ridden by jockey Oscar Ulloa and trained by Antonio Abarca.
The showcase Arabian race, the Shadwell Arabian Cup saw a field of 8 Purebred Arabian horses line up to contest the 2,400 metre race. It was won by the eye-catching grey ZULU who won by a considerable margin of 8 lengths.
News of further international race sponsorship by Shadwell Estate Company Ltd and the Dubai International Arabian Races will be available soon.
