Shadwell Race Sponsorship Programme Announced for 2017

Posted on: 10th Apr 2017

Shadwell Estate Company Ltd has supported racing in Europe for more than 15 years and the company announced today they will continue their investment into Thoroughbred racing and breeding by revealing their race sponsorship programme for 2017. This year, Shadwell will contribute £330,000 to Thoroughbred racing across three meetings in Britain and France.

In Britain, Shadwell will once again sponsor day two of the Cambridgeshire meeting at the Rowley Mile, Newmarket, on Friday 29th September. The seven race card is headed by a pair of Group 2 races – the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes and Shadwell Joel Stakes.

Last year’s Shadwell Rockfel Stakes was won by French raider SPAIN BURG (FR), while the Shadwell Joel Stakes went the way of Aidan O’Brien’s 2017 Tattersalls Gold Cup entrant (Gr.1) COUGAR MOUNTAIN (IRE).

Additionally, Shadwell will be offering 100 beneficiaries of Racing Welfare and the Injured Jockeys Fund the opportunity to come racing for free again this year on Shadwell Day at the Rowley Mile.

In September 2016, Ayr Racecourse benefited from Shadwell’s renewed sponsorship of the Harry Rosebery Stakes (Listed Race) for two-year-olds. The race was won by talented juvenile CLEM FANDANGO (FR), locally trained by Keith Dalgleish. Shadwell will continue to support Ayr Racecourse in 2017, sponsoring 4 races, including an additional Listed contest on Ayr Bronze Cup Day, Friday 22nd September. By sponsoring this event, Shadwell aims to raise the profile of the Al Maktoum College of Higher Education in Dundee, of which HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the patron. The college aims to advance cross cultural understanding by running open lectures and short courses as well as residential courses for students from the UAE.

The regular summer fixture at Deauville will also remain on Shadwell’s sponsorship roster for 2017, with six races funded by Shadwell on Saturday 19th August, headed by the Group 2 Prix de la Nonette.

Richard Lancaster, Shadwell Stud Director commented:

“The support of Thoroughbred racing is an integral part of Shadwell’s ethos. It gives us a chance to invest in the sport, which His Highness Sheikh Hamdan is most passionate about. It also affords us the opportunity to meet the owners and breeders from all over Europe who have supported our stallions. We are delighted to have had a great deal of support from many French breeders, who have sent mares to MUHAARAR in his first two seasons. Therefore, sponsoring in France is an ideal opportunity to meet and thank them, while giving something back to the industry.”
