Shadwell will continue to sponsor racing across Europe in 2019

SHADWELL ESTATE COMPANY LIMITED has reaffirmed its commitment to European racing by expanding its sponsorship portfolio in 2019 in a move that will see the organisation contribute more than £400,000 across four meetings in Britain and France.

Deauville is the first port of call for Shadwell’s sponsorship bandwagon in 2019, with the company set to sponsor eight races on Saturday, August 17. In addition to the Group 2 Prix du Calvados and Group 2 Prix de la Nonette, this year’s card will include an additional stakes race, the Group 3 Shadwell Prix Daphnis, a race for three-year-olds who have not won at Group 1 or Group 2 level.

Shadwell’s showcase event will be staged at Newmarket on day two of the Cambridgeshire meeting. The seven race card – which takes place on Friday, September 27 – will be headlined by a pair of Group 2 races: the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes and Shadwell Joel Stakes.

Last year’s renewal of the Rockfel Stakes was won by the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly JUST WONDERFUL, who went on to finish an admirable fourth in the Grade 1 Breeders’ cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs. The Joel Stakes was taken by Sir Michael Stoute’s consistent performer MUSTASHRY, who carried the colours of the day’s sponsor Sheikh Hamdan.

Additionally, Shadwell will be offering 100 beneficiaries of the Racing Welfare and the Injured Jockeys Fund the opportunity to come racing for free again this year on Shadwell Day at the Rowley Mile.

Shadwell, along with the Al Maktoum College, will once again sponsor a day’s racing at Ayr during the track’s Gold Cup Festival. Shadwell and the college will combine to sponsor four races, including two Listed contests: the Harry Rosebery Stakes and the Scottish Fillies’ Sprint Stakes.

In addition to sponsoring the Salisbury Apprentice Series, Shadwell will also continue its sponsorship of the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes in 2019, a race won last year by the Roger Varian-trained YOURTIMEISNOW, whose dam MAID FOR WINNING was covered by Shadwell’s flagship stallion MUHAARAR in 2018.

This year’s Dick Poole Stakes will be run on Thursday, September 5.

Richard Lancaster, Shadwell Stud Director, said: “Shadwell has been sponsoring Thoroughbred racing in Europe for the best part of 20 years and it’s an important part of the company’s ethos. It gives us a chance to invest in the sport, which Sheikh Hamdan is so passionate about. It also offers the team at Shadwell a great opportunity to meet the owners and breeders from around Europe who have supported the stallions.

“We sponsored the Dick Poole Stakes for the first time in 2018 and we were keen to do so again this year. It often throws up a talented filly and is a good prep race for the Shadwell-sponsored Rockfel Stakes later in the month.”
