Shadwell sponsor Shetland Pony Grand National runner

Posted on: 20th Jun 2016

All is not as it seems however, when you realise their new representative stands at only 10.5hh and his victory was at the South of England Show with a jockey who is only 13 years old!  Briers SMOKEY JO is himself 7 years old but is a very game contender as is evident from the photo.

Shadwell have sponsored Briers SMOKEY JO in the 2016 Shetland Grand National Series and hope that he and his jockey, young lady rider Kinvara Garner, will qualify for this year’s Olympia: The London International Horse Show in December where the original idea to support the initiative came about in 2015.

Rachael Gowland, Shadwell’s Marketing Manager explained: “We had taken a group of clients to the final evening at Olympia and saw the Shetland Pony Grand National, which is always an enormous amount of fun.  We thought it might be an interesting bit of PR to have the Shadwell colours involved and when we investigated further with the Shetland Pony Grand National programme and heard that 2016’s nominated charity was the Bob Champion Cancer Trust – that sealed it!  To be able to support a project that promotes racing and horse riding in a fun way and be able to contribute to a very worthwhile cause is really exciting.”

Sebastian Garner Director of Shetland Pony Grand National added: “The idea is that HH Sheikh Hamdan’s colours will travel the UK appearing at Agricultural & County Shows, and Major Equestrian events such as Badminton and Royal Windsor Horse Show and for the first time the team will be at Carfest North & South run by the BBC Radio 2 and BBC Top Gear presenter Chris Evans throughout the summer with the culmination of the year being at the Olympia The London International Horse Show in London in December.

Briers SMOKEY JO and Kinvara’s progress will be reported on through the Shadwell Facebook and Twitter feeds.”

Future events for the Shetland Grand National include the next qualifier for Olympia: The London International Horse Show which will be at the Lincolnshire Show on 23rd June. In addition to other shows throughout the summer there will be a flat race on 29th August at Epsom Racecourse and an appearance at Plumpton Racecourse in October.
