Shadwell UAE Season Preview Week 9, 2017

HH Sheikh Hamdan's colours will be seen a lot this week

HH Sheikh Hamdan enjoyed a fantastic night at Meydan last week, with a double, the highlight being the victory of Muarrab in the Listed Garhoud Sprint, while Etijaah claimed the Listed Entisar Stakes. It was Muarrab’s first win since landing the 2016 Dubai Golden Shaheen and his first since joining trainer Ali Rashid Al Rayhi, and this success puts him on course for a return to that race in March. He was ridden by Dane O’Neill, as was Etijaah, who claimed a third Entisar victory for trainer Doug Watson.

This weekend there is just one meeting in the UAE, with Jebel Ali hosting its usual six race card on Friday. The Shadwell team run a high class team of five, starting with Nathr and Munaaser, who lock horns in the Jebel Ali Mile Prep. First retained rider Jim Crowley is back in the UAE this weekend and he has opted to ride the Watson-trained Nathr, who looks for a first Jebel Ali success. He was fourth in this race last year and is very talented on his day, so has a good chance. O’Neill rides Munaaser, without a victory since scoring at the Carnival two years ago. A forward-going sort, he is drawn in six and should be well-placed early on in what looks a very open contest.

Just one goes in the 1950metre handicap for Sheikh Hamdan; Mustadeem taking his chance for Crowley and Al Rahyi. The five-year-old returns after a 685-day break and is probably going to need this outing to get him back on track.

A 1200metre handicap closes the card and Farook is the choice of Crowley. The grey three-year-old makes his local debut for Erwan Charpy here, having previously been handled in the UK by Charlie Hills. By Raven’s Pass, it will be interesting to see how he adapts to dirt. He faces the Maria Ritchie-trained Azmaam, who makes a quick return having run down the field at Meydan last week. Given seven pounds back by the handicapper after that run, he has just his second start at Jebel Ali.
