Richard Lancaster's route to Compostela in aid of The Royal British Legion, Racing Welfare and MIND

Posted on: 9th May 2017

In 2010, I set out on a walk from Arles in France.  This was the start of an old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain, a distance of over 1500kms.  Over the last 7 years, I have covered 1200kms in stages and have reached the city of Leon in Spain.  I am now about to embark on the final 300kms, setting out on Wednesday 10th May.

I am fortunate to have a group of good friends who have accompanied me on the route and a number of them will be joining me on this final stage.

It has been an incredible challenge but one which has brought with it great satisfaction and some wonderful moments to look back on.  It has also been very rewarding as, thanks to great generosity, I have managed to raise money for a number of charities, namely Racing Welfare, MacMillan Cancer Support, ABF Soldier’s Charity and The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards – Caring for Courage Fund.

A number of you have been incredibly generous on this journey, but I would like to run a final collection for three very worthwhile causes.  The first is the Royal British Legion, who work tirelessly to ensure that those members of the Armed Forces who have suffered as a result of serving their country are cared for in the right way.

I am including Racing Welfare, once again.  This charity is there to provide guidance and practical help to stud, stable and support staff who are the essential components of the racing industry.

Finally, I have included MIND.  I am sure many of you have become increasingly aware of the concern with mental health and the effect it can have on those we have contact with on a daily basis.  MIND is there to ensure no-one suffers alone.

I hope that you will feel that you can contribute in some way.  You can either send a cheque payable to the individual charity or to Shadwell Estate Company Limited (Charity Walk Fund); cheques may be sent to me at Shadwell Estate Co Ltd, Nunnery Stud, Thetford Norfolk  IP24 2QE.  Alternatively, you can donate via my Just Giving page for your preferred charity as shown below:-

I am already indebted to a number of people, none more than my wife, Judy, who has had to put up with my training regime.  She will be in Santiago de Compostela with a wife support group to greet us as we complete the route on Wednesday 24th May.

I would like to stress that every penny raised goes to the charities.  Your support will be invaluable and will do so much to help these worthwhile causes.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Lancaster
