Star miler Mohaather retired to Nunnery Stud

The highest rated son of Showcasing won the Sussex Stakes in 2020

Group 1 Sussex Stakes winner MOHAATHER, who has underpinned Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s stunning 2020 season, will start his stallion career under the Shadwell banner at Nunnery Stud in Norfolk next year.

The colt, who was expertly handled by Marcus Tregoning, beat a host of talented runners at Goodwood that day including Newmarket and Curragh 2,000 Guineas winners KAMEKO and SISKIN as well as multiple Group 1-winning miler CIRCUS MAXIMUS and the Classic-placed WICHITA and VATICAN CITY.

However, it was the nature of the four-year-old’s victory on the Sussex Downs that impressed the most. Having been boxed in with just under two furlongs to run, MOHAATHER circled the field and displayed his customary electric turn of foot to take the lead and win a shade cosily in a quicker time than 2014 winner KINGMAN.

MOHAATHER’s Goodwood success came on the back of a scintillating victory in the Group 2 Summer Mile, in which he flew up the Ascot straight to readily beat a high-class field by three and three-quarter lengths. He had previously been unlucky at the Berkshire venue, when unable to find a clear passage in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The 123-rated colt was an equally talented performer as a juvenile and at three, notching a pair of Group 3 victories over seven furlongs at Newbury in the Horris Hill Stakes and Greenham Stakes.

MOHAATHER, the highest rated son of SHOWCASING, was bred by Gaie Johnson Houghton out of her star producer ROODEYE, a dual winner who was Listed-placed at two. The INCHINOR mare has produced eight winners, including high-class sprinter-miler PRIZE EXHIBIT and dual scorer ROODLE, dam of Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes winner ACCIDENTAL AGENT.

The pedigree is awash with talented two-year-old performers and a little further down his page can be found the Group winners ASTAIRE and BANNISTER, along with Prix Morny runner-up GALLAGHER and IMPERIAL YELLOW, who has won and finished third in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes this year.

Richard Lancaster, Shadwell Stud Director, said: “The entire team at Shadwell are delighted to be standing MOHAATHER at the Nunnery. He put up arguably the best performance of any miler this year when defeating a top-class field in the Sussex Stakes, backing up what was an ultra-impressive performance in the Summer Mile at Ascot. His explosive turn of foot will live long in the memory.

“It’s important to remember MOHAATHER was also a Group winner at two and three and he has the physical prowess to match his racecourse exploits. He is particularly attractive – a beautiful dark bay – and is an extraordinarily well-balanced individual with a superb walk. You can see how he generated that speed: he has a great hindquarter and second thigh.”

A fee for MOHAATHER will be announced at a later date.
