Fred and Rowena Cook, who run an equine management and training centre out of their base in Lincolnshire, do a terrific job retraining and rehoming horses from around the country, including a handful who used to carry the Shadwell silks.
Over the next few months, we will be running a series showcasing what several of our former charges have gone on to achieve in their second careers.
This week, Rowena discusses a quartet of former Shadwell residents:
KHENAIZY is a ten-year-old son of MUTHATHIR. Bred by Shadwell, out of the GREEN DESERT mare, AMJHOOJ.
KHENAIZY took a while to settle in to a new way of life, but Vanessa remained patient. Once he mentally matured, KHENAIZY proved very adept at dressage and cross country jumping, especially Jumpcross, a discipline that has never seen him out of the placings.
MITRAAD was also bred by Shadwell. The nine-year-old is by the late AQLAAM out the KINGMAMBO mare BADWEIA.
MITRAAD has been a very sensitive horse. Clare is so calm and quiet with him, slowly introducing him to new experiences. MITRAAD is proving to be a fun, all-round riding horse, who is enjoying his hacking out and beach, attending flatwork, polework and jumping clinics. He has also ventured into a couple of dressage competitions.
QINTAAR is a smart five-year-old chestnut by DAWN APPROACH. A half-brother to NASEEM SEA, QINTAAR is out of the ALHAARTH mare, LAQATAAT.
QINTAAR came to us as a two-year-old and instantly stood out as a show horse, so we rehomed him to our dear friend, Claire, who showed him in-hand during his three-year-old year. QINTAAR either won or cam second in every competition in which he competed.
In the Autumn of 2019, he was backed and over the winter was introduced to side-saddle. Claire had a spring and summer showing campaign mapped out which included entries at the Royal Windsor Show. He is ticking over in hope there might be some shows running later in the year.
NASEEM is an attractive six-year-old son of SEA THE STARS. Purchased from Tattersalls December Foal Sale in 2014, NASEEM is a half-brother to French Listed winner, MIXED INTENTIONS, out of the DANEHILL DANCER mare, CHIOSINA.
We loved working with NASEEM, he was enthusiastic and just soaked everything up like a sponge. With his super movement, dressage beckoned, so we homed him with Maddi in the knowledge that she had trained with Carl Hester, giving the horse a strong chance of succeeding.
NASEEM has already be used in demonstrations and attended competitions and is ready to roll as soon as dressage competitions resume.
