Gr.1 July Cup win for MUHAARAR

Posted on: 13th Jul 2015

MUHAARAR (pictured above in the colours of HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum) stamped his authority on the Gr.1 Darley July Cup on Saturday 11th July by grinding out a win against a 14 strong field by the margin of just a nose.

The home-bred colt is a grand-son of renown sire GREEN DESERT and is by Juddmonte stallion OASIS DREAM, both of whom were July Cup winners themselves. He is out of Shadwell Stud's TAHRIR who is the dam of 3 other stakes performers: TAMAATHUL, RAASEKHA and SAJWAH. This was the third horse to win the July Cup in the colours of HH Shiekh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, following ELNADIM (1998) and HAMAS (1993).

MUHAARAR (meaning Liberated in Arabic) was the 2014 winner of the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes at York and rounded off his 2 year old career with a 3rd place in the Middle Park Stakes (Gr.1), missing out by only 1 1/4 lengths.

He kick started his 3 year old campaign with a win in the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury before a disappointing run over a mile in France in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains. A return to a sprint distance saw MUHAARAR regain his composure in impressive style with a 3 and 3/4 length win in the inaugural running of the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot under Dane O'Neill.

Saturday's win in the July Cup under Paul Hanagan has propelled the son of OASIS DREAM in to the top sprinting competitors in Europe this year. Charles Hill (trainer) has intimated that future races could include the Prix Maurice de Gheest over 6.5f and the Sprint Cup at Haydock.
