MUHAARAR wins the inaugural Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot

Trained by Charles Hills, MUHAARAR has been the stand-out performer of the European sprinting circuit this season winning 4 Gr.1 races in succession beginning with the inaugural Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June by an impressive 3 ¾ lengths.  The Shadwell homebred went on to mirror his sire OASIS DREAM and grand-sire GREEN DESERT in their achievements by winning the July Cup (Gr.1), before completing the hat-trick with a ½ length win in the Prix Maurice de Gheest (Gr.1) in Deauville in August.  In doing so, MUHAARAR became the first British trained horse to complete a hat-trick of sprinting Gr.1 victories since DAYJUR, who also ran in the colours of HH Sheikh Hamdan, in 1990.

The story was not over however, with this accomplishment; his fourth and final victory at the highest level came on QIPCO British Champion’s Day with an impressive 2 length win in the British Champions Sprint Stakes (Gr.1). He came home the best of a 20 strong field and added the scalps of Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye winner MAAREK and Gr.1 Sprint Cup winner TWILIGHT SON to his already impressive haul of defeated stakes winners.

These performances, along with his course-record breaking Greenham Stakes (Gr.3) win earlier in the year, make him the leading contender for the title of Champion European Sprinter and Cartier Sprinter of 2015.

MUHAARAR (whose name means Liberated) was a top class juvenile, winning the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes at York. During his racing career he has beaten 12 individual Gr.1 winners including multiple Gr.1 winners SOLE POWER, ESOTERIQUE, GORDON LORD BYRON and the best sprinters from the rest of the world including BRAZEN BEAU. In total, MUHAARAR has beaten 57 individual stakes winners.

Being a Shadwell home-bred, MUHAARAR is bred in the purple.  He is the best produce to date of the 6 foals of racing age from TAHRIR, a LINAMIX mare that has produced 5 winners of which 4 are stakes horses. As a son of OASIS DREAM, he carries the mantle of his grand-sire, the recently deceased GREEN DESERT, who stood the entirety of his career at the Nunnery Stud under the stewardship of Shadwell.

Speaking yesterday, Richard Lancaster, Shadwell’s Stud Director commented:

“We are delighted to have the privilege of standing MUHAARAR at the Nunnery Stud.  He is a beautifully bred colt and a real Champion.  We have waited a long time to stand a horse of this quality in our own right at Shadwell and we are very grateful to His Highness Sheikh Hamdan for entrusting him to us.  We were very lucky to have been allocated MUKHADRAM last year who filled very quickly and has proved extremely popular again for 2016; so now we have MUHAARAR to complement him and become our flagship stallion. It is a huge boost to everyone at Shadwell and marks a new chapter in our history.

Due to his quality and impressive race-record, and in line with Shadwell policy, MUHAARAR will cover a limited book which will be selected by the team at Shadwell.  Preference will be given to Group winners and producers as we are determined to attract the best possible mares for him.  Breeders will have until the end of business on Wednesday 2nd December 2015 to put their mare forward for the application process.

We will be taking MUHAARAR and MUKHADRAM to Beech House Stud in Newmarket during the Tattersalls December Sales so people will have plenty of opportunity to view MUHAARAR before they put their mares forward for consideration.”

Applications for MUHAARAR should be made to the nominations department at Shadwell Stud by Wednesday 2nd December 2015.

MUHAARAR’S fee will be announced at a later date.
