MUKHADRAM, the 2014 Coral Eclipse winner, will be retired from racing at the end of the flat season and will stand at Shadwell Stud in 2015.

The 190,000gns Tattersalls December Foal Sales purchase has paid Shadwell back in spades; winning just shy of £2 million in prize money and after consistently performing at the highest level, the best son of SHAMARDAL will take up his place as a stallion at the Nunnery Stud (Norfolk), alongside fellow Gr.1 winner NAYEF and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner SAKHEE.

In 2013 MUKHADRAM (Shamardal x Magic Tree) won both the Gr.3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes and the Gr.2 York Stakes as well as finishing second in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Gr.1) at Royal Ascot, beaten just a neck by multiple Gr.1 winner AL KAZEEM.

2014 brought MUKHADRAM’S day in the sun with an emphatic win over a field of 9 in the Gr.1 Coral Eclipse, beating Gr.1 winners THE FUGUE, KINGSTON HILL, WAR COMMAND, NIGHT OF THUNDER and TRADING LEATHER. Earlier in the year, he had showcased his power and determination with a stunning effort in the Gr.1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan; on this occasion, he beat another 8 Gr.1 winners.

His trainer William Haggas conveyed his thoughts on MUKHADRAM’S career and highlighted some of the horse’s best attributes for his new role as a stallion:

“MUKHADRAM was a hugely talented and courageous colt, a top class racehorse, blessed with a wonderful temperament. He has the most gorgeous physique – a perfect specimen with a great outlook and natural, effortless stride. You will easily see why he has always been the apple of my eye.”

Richard Lancaster, Shadwell’s Stud Director, commented: “MUKHADRAM is a Gr.1 winner in the UK and has defeated a total of 49 Stakes winners to date including 24 individual Gr.1 winners. He will also be the first son of Shamardal to stand in the UK and with his sire experiencing a real purple patch with 20 stakes winners in 2014 alone, Sheikh Hamdan felt now was the right time to retire him to stud. A fee has not yet been set for him, but our intention is to pitch him very fairly to attract the maximum number of mares and give him the best possible start to his stallion career.”

Angus Gold, Racing Manager to His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum added: “He has been an exceptional racehorse who puts 110% in to every run and has been very consistent. He has travelled internationally and beaten some world class horses along the way; his winning time in the Eclipse was one of the fastest of recent years beating the times of horses like NATHANIEL and TWICE OVER.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate William Haggas and his team for everything they did for the horse and helping him realise his full potential. Credit must also go to Paul Hanagan who has ridden him throughout his career.”

MUKHADRAM is the second foal out of the lightly raced mare MAGIC TREE (Timber Country), a half sister to Gr.1 winner KIRKLEES and high class middle distance winner MASTERY. She is grand-daughter of high-class sprinter CHEROKEE ROSE. MAGIC TREE has produced winners from her 2 other foals of racing age including group placed WOODLAND ARIA.

MUKHADRAM will be available to view at Beech House Stud throughout the Tattersalls December Breeding Stock Sales.
