ALFLAILA WINS BACK-TO-BACK GR.2 YORK STAKES
“Alflaila clearly loves it here and I really do think he has a Group 1 in him."
Shadwell’s consistent and high-class homebred Alflaila secured his fifth black-type race with a decisive victory over smart performers King’s Gambit and Passenger in the Group 2 York Stakes at York on Saturday.
This was his second consecutive success in the always competitive contest.
The Owen Burrows-trained five-year-old, who finished fourth in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on his seasonal reappearance, has now won seven races and more than £430,000 in prize-money.
Alflaila could now line up in the Juddmonte International at York, a course over which he has won three times and finished second in only four starts.
Jim Crowley, Shadwell’s retained jockey who partnered the horse at the weekend, reported: “Alflaila clearly loves it here and I really do think he has a Group 1 in him.
"He was very unlucky in the Irish Champion Stakes last year. I got behind, the horses in front of me came back, and it was a mess of a race. Owen's done a great job bringing him back from that.
“I thought it was a really good run at Royal Ascot when he wasn't tip-top going into there, and to run fourth in the Prince of Wales's was great. I believe he'll probably take another step forward from today.”
Alflaila is by Dark Angel out of the Listed-placed Oasis Dream mare Adhwaa, who in turn is a half-sister to German Listed winner Shaqira out of Cheshire Oaks heroine Hammiya.
