Shadwell team bid to extend fine run of form in the UAE

Laura King with her preview of the action in the Emirates

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan ended last week in fine style, when Hakeem gave him a win in a competitive seven-furlong handicap at Abu Dhabi. Ridden by Jim Crowley for trainer Al Rashid Al Rayhi, the Exceed And Excel gelding snuck through along the rail and held on by a neck, recording his fourth career victory and third in the Emirates.

There are three meetings this week, beginning on Friday when Jebel Ali holds its final card of the season. The Shadwell team have a strong hand in the seven-furlong handicap, race two, led by Moqarrab who was fourth over course and distance a year ago. Raced just three times since that, he wasn’t disgraced at Meydan last time and should go well again.

His rivals include Ali Rashid Al Rayhi’s Almoreb, who is just 3lbs higher than when winning here over course and distance in November. Set a couple of tough tasks since, including on turf at Meydan when he was only beaten five and a half lengths, this assignment looks slightly easier. He is the choice of first retained rider Jim Crowley and will break from stall 12.

The featured Jebel Ali Silver Jubilee Classic, race four, is also over seven furlongs and has attracted an extremely strong field. There are three Shadwell runners, including Doug Watson’s Fanaar, who was a good second here in the Listed Jebel Ali Sprint. That was over five furlongs, however, and he returns to this trip for the first time since October, when he was a solid third here behind the re-opposing Mystique Moon.

He goes under Dane O’Neill, with Crowley having chosen to ride Alkaamel, one of two runners here for Musabbeh Al Mheiri, who also runs Alfareeq. Both are returning quickly after finishing eighth and third, respectively, at Meydan last week. Alkaamel, who has been unlucky not to add to his win record this season, handles Jebel Ali well and was fifth here in the Group 3 Mile in January. He goes from stall five with Alfareeq breaking from 12 on his second start at this track.

The fifth race is a very tricky six-furlong handicap, in which Jahaafel goes for Al Mheiri. Making just his second start at this track, the six-year-old has struggled so far in the UAE and now goes off a mark of 72, 10lb lower than when he arrived here at the end of 2019. He will be partnered by O’Neill with Crowley on Farook for Erwan Charpy. He is a multiple course winner, having scored here three times in 2017-18. He ran well when sixth after chasing the pace at Al Ain last Friday and has conditions to suit him here, with a high draw in 14.

The concluding nine and a half-furlong handicap looks a good chance for Masaali to continue the belated but bright start to his career. Trained by Watson, the five-year-old has been placed in all three starts so far, including winning here over seven furlongs, but this extra trip is a step into the unknown.

The trip is not a concern for stablemate Maqaadeer, the mount of Crowley, who won over ten furlongs at Sharjah last time out and was second over this course and distance in January. Back up to a mark of 70, he is largely consistent and should run another solid race, off a light weight of 55.5 kilos.

Abu Dhabi hosts a strong card on Sunday evening, which includes the Group 3 Abu Dhabi Championship, for thoroughbreds over 11 furlongs.

Mudaarab takes his chance here for Charpy, running for the third time since a year off the track. Well-beaten in a strong handicap over nine furlongs at Meydan last time out, this step back up in trip will play to his strengths as he was a winner over this trip on his last visit to the capital in February 2020.
