A glorious Shadwell double at Goodwood

Al Aasy provided the first leg of a magnificent double, homebred colt Mudbir also continued his progression

Shadwell’s fabulous old stager Al Aasy (header image) recorded the tenth black-type victory of his career with an impressive score in the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday.

The William Haggas-trained eight-year-old was in cruise control at the rear of the field in the early stages of the Group 3 race but made stealthy headway and took the lead a furlong from home. He quickly forged clear to win by three lengths.

“Al Aasy is terrific isn't he?” said Haggas after the race. “He's pretty reliable in this grade when things set up like that. They didn't go very fast today - he usually likes a stronger pace - but they picked up well up the straight and he found a gear.”

Al Aasy was a cosy winner of the Glorious Stakes last year too. His roll of honour also includes the Bahrain Trophy at three, the John Porter Stakes and Aston Park Stakes at four, the Buckhounds Stakes at five, the Steventon Stakes and Rose of Lancaster Stakes at six, the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at seven and the Gordon Richards Stakes earlier this year at eight. He also finished a neck second in the Coronation Cup at four.

He is another outstanding performer for Shadwell by Sea The Stars – like European champion and Beech House Stud stallion Baaeed, whose keenly anticipated first crop of yearlings are going under the hammer in the coming months.

Al Aasy provided the first leg of a magnificent double for Shadwell at Goodwood on Saturday, as homebred three-year-old colt Mudbir continued his progression with a brave victory in the seven-furlong handicap on the card.

Mudbir, trained by John and Thady Gosden, enhanced the pedigree of another of the operation’s stallions. He is a Kingman three-parts brother to dual Group 1 heroine Nazeef and a half-brother to Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Juddmonte International victor Mostahdaf, who stands alongside Baaeed at Beech House Stud and has first foals on the ground.
