Dewhurst Stakes Winner Mujahid Has Passed Away Aged 30
Paolo Crespi reflected fondly on his life: “He became a big gain for Italy. He is also a very, very good broodmare sire".
Shadwell can confirm the passing of 1998 Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes winner and sire Mujahid at Allevamento di Besnate in Italy.
Trained by John Dunlop and ridden in all his starts by Richard Hills, the Shadwell Farm homebred’s victory in the Dewhurst Stakes saw him crowned Champion Two-Year-Old. He went on to finish third in the 2000 Guineas Stakes the following season.
During a long and prosperous stud career, his top performers included multiple Group 1 winner Danleigh in Australia and Balius, winner of the Jebel Hatta and a Group 1 performer. After a period standing at Shadwell’s Beech House Stud and shuttling to Widden Stud, he spent the majority of his stallion career at Paolo Crespi’s Allevamento di Besnate, where he was crowned Champion Italian-based sire on seven occasions.
Paolo Crespi reflected fondly on his life: “He became a big gain for Italy. He is also a very, very good broodmare sire and did very well in Australia in the few years he shuttled. His horses could run forever, every second week, and if you had a racehorse by Mujahid you would never be let down. His progeny could be running in Group, Listed, handicap or even selling races - they would be competitive and totally affordable. He was like that himself, always aggressive, eager to cover a mare or to eat a tonne of hay. He was the same every day, until his last one. He was our friend.”
Mujahid remained in Shadwell’s ownership throughout his life, and the operation would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Paolo Crespi and his team for the care, attention and diligence shown throughout his time in Italy.
