Awtaad’s Al Qareem takes Goliath Cup for Tenth Stakes Success
Al Qareem rarely runs a bad race and, if this reappearance is any guide, there should be plenty more to come . . .
Awtaad’s admirable performer Al Qareem returned with a typically determined display to land the Listed Goliath Cup at Musselburgh, bringing up his tenth Stakes victory and thirteenth career win.
Now a seven-year-old, he showed his typical toughness and resilience on the seasonal reappearance, a performance entirely in character. Sent straight to the lead under Clifford Lee, he set his usual honest tempo, with Mount Atlas and Roaring Legend tracking in behind. The shape of the race remained largely unchanged until the home turn and for a moment, the favourite appeared vulnerable, but in keeping with his profile, he rallied gamely, finding a second wind close home to wrestle back the advantage and score by half a length.
Al Qareem has now won 13 of 36 starts, with ten of those victories coming at black-type level, including multiple renewals of the Gr.3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes and the Gr.2 Prix Chaudenay earlier in his career. He also held his own at the highest-level last season, finishing third in both the G1 Irish St Leger and the Gr.1 British Champions Long Distance Cup.
Bred by Shadwell and purchased by his trainer Karl Burke and owner Nick Bradley Racing for 27,000gns at the Tattersalls 2021 Autumn Horses in Training Sale, he has proved an outstanding investment with earnings of £824,425 to date – a true representation of “Ireland’s best value sire”.
Al Qareem rarely runs a bad race and, if this reappearance is any guide, there should be plenty more to come from one of the division’s most likeable and dependable performers.
