Awtaad’s full-brother to Ethical Diamond makes headlines at Goffs Foal Sale
“Awtaad gets very good-looking horses and his stats are fantastic. He probably hasn't got the credit he deserves…”
As we enter the final few weeks of 2025 it is safe to say Awtaad continues to prove time and time again the exceptional value and consistency he offers in the sales ring and on the racetrack.
Following an unrivalled page update in Ethical Diamond’s track record breaking success in the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Turf, interest in his full brother, Lot 678 did not disappoint. Many key players put their hat in the ring but the winning bid was struck by Ross Doyle at €380,000 on behalf of long-standing Scandinavian clients Stall Perlen.
“I know the update is unbelievable but the foal itself was an outstanding individual. A big, deep, good-moving dark bay with an unbelievable temperament. The full-brother is obviously an extremely good horse who is trained by a genius.”
“All options are open but it might be hard not to race a horse like him. If you go to the top yearling sales next year and try to buy a horse like him, it’ll be hard work. They’re very sporting people and have been in the industry for a long time. This is only the start of the story, hopefully, although it’s already been a great story for the breeders.”
Consigned by Stanley Lodge Stud, Stud owner William Kennedy explained they mostly work on a boutique commercial basis, however, Ethical Diamond was the product of his own sideline. The €380,000 colt was bred when Awtaad stood for just €5,000.
“When we had Ethical Diamond at home, broke him in and raced him, we knew what a nice horse he was, so it was easy for me to go back to Awtaad. Obviously I never thought we’d have a Breeders’ Cup winner, but I knew we’d get a nice horse.”
“Awtaad is a lovely stallion and I’ve always supported him. It’s hard to find a Group 1 winner over a mile, a Classic winner over a mile, at good value in this marketplace, but he is. They take a little bit of time to come to hand, but when he gets the right mares, he gets the results. Ethical Diamond has put Pearl Diamond (Areion) on the map. She’s in foal to Australia and we have a decision to make about where we go next year. Awtaad would be a great cover for her and I’d love to get a couple of fillies off her, but maybe I should be more commercial, I don’t know.”
Doyle has a similar view “Awtaad gets very good-looking horses and his stats are fantastic. He probably hasn't got the credit he deserves but, when a horse like this lad's brother comes along, it might just propel him to the next level.”
Stanley Lodge Stud also sold a striking filly out of Lady Magdala by Awtaad for a healthy €75,000 to Tradewinds, taking their running total on day 3 to €1,254,000.
Awtaad is a proven source of top-class performers, including Group 1 winners Anmaat, Anisette, and the aforementioned Ethical Diamond. In a remarkable year, he has sired four new Stakes winners in 2025 amongst a host of other exploits. All things considered, he continues to strengthen his reputation as one of the best-value sires on the market, standing for an admirable €8,500 in 2026 at Derrinstown Stud.
