Fan-favourite Al Aasy is victorious at Glorious Goodwood
“He’s seven now so he’s been with us for a while and I think finally he’s maturing; it took a while!”
A fine Glorious Goodwood for Shadwell was capped by the victory of the operation’s popular old stager Al Aasy winning the Group 3 Glorious Stakes on the final day of the meeting.
The William Haggas-trained seven-year-old travelled sweetly at the rear of the field under Shadwell's retained rider Jim Crowley and squeezed through a space on the rail in the final furlong to score a shade cosily from the useful Relentless Voyager.
This was Al Aasy’s eighth success overall, the seventh in stakes company. In a glittering career he has also finished second in the Coronation Cup and Princess of Wales’s Stakes.
“He’s seven now so he’s been with us for a while and I think finally he’s maturing; it took a while!” said Sheikha Hissa about the loveable hold-up performer. “He was unlucky at Newbury on his last start, so it’s good to have him back. We think highly of him.
“He thought he was out for a canter in the beginning of the race. He’s just had a good day out in his own mind. A typical boy! He’s always fun, you never know what you’re going to get with him.”
Al Aasy is by Sea The Stars – also sire of Shadwell’s outstanding champion and home sire Baaeed – and was bred by Sunderland Holding out of the Shamardal mare Kitcara.
Shadwell also tasted victory at Glorious Goodwood this year with Raqiya in the Oak Tree Stakes, while all of the eight runners who carried the iconic blue and white silks on the Sussex Downs last week finished in the first four, a fine achievement at such a competitive meeting.
Furthermore, the operation’s exciting first-season sire Mohaather was represented by the Molecomb Stakes winner Big Mojo.
