Israr strikes at Royal Ascot
A hugely impressive Listed Wolferton Stakes success for the Shadwell homebred
Beautifully bred entire Israr ran out a wide-margin winner of the Listed Wolferton Stakes on the opening day of Royal Ascot on Tuesday.
The John and Thady Gosden-trained five-year-old travelled strongly throughout the ten-furlong contest, and cruised into the lead two furlongs from home. Once given his office by jockey Jim Crowley he bounded further and further clear, eventually scoring by three-and-a-quarter lengths.
Israr has now won five races, including the Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket last year, and has finished out of the first three on only three of his 18 starts.
Israr is the result of a mating between two homebred Shadwell champions. His sire Muhaarar was a brilliant sprinter who has sired 25 stakes winners, including Eshaada and Marhaba Ya Sanafi at the top level, and now stands at Haras du Petit Tellier, while his dam Taghrooda was an outstanding winner of the Oaks and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Taghrooda has a three-year-old filly by Kingman named Taraneem in training with the Gosdens, and a two-year-old colt by Lope De Vega. She was covered by Wootton Bassett this year after foaling a Mohaather colt.
