Malmoos wins South African Triple Crown for Shadwell
Mike de Kock-trained colt carries all before him at Turffontein
Shadwell South Africa celebrated a famous success as MALMOOS completed the country’s Triple Crown with a smooth victory in the Group 1 SA Derby at Turffontein on Saturday.
The son of CAPTAIN AL travelled with ease in the 12-furlong contest and it required only a shake of the reins by jockey Luke Ferraris for the colt to shoot clear of his rivals. He won unchallenged by five and a quarter lengths.
The Mike de Kock-trained MALMOOS took the first two legs of this year’s Triple Crown when landing the Group 2 Gauteng Guineas over a mile in March and the Group 1 SA Classic over nine furlongs in March.
He has now won seven of his eights starts and joins legends such as HORSE CHESTNUT and LOUIS THE KING on the Triple Crown roll of honour.
MALMOOS was bred by Varsfontein Stud out of the Listed-winning FORT WOOD mare JUSTTHEWAYYOUARE, making him a full-brother to Group 3 scorer CAPTAIN SPLENDID.
He hails from one of the best families in the South African stud book, as his dam is a half-sister to Group 2 winner MASTER OF MY FATE out of Triple Tiara heroine PROMISEFROMMYHEART, and she is related to wonderful champions LONDON NEWS and KINGS GAMBIT.
MALMOOS was the second top lot at the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale when sold to Shadwell for R4.4 million.
Mike de Kock trained many other stars who carried the late His Highness Sheikh Hamdan’s illustrious blue and white silks in South Africa, including ERTIJAAL, HAWWAAM, RAFEEF and SOQRAT.
