Mohaather's Big Mojo back with a bang in the Gr.3 Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes
“He's been working really well against some of the older horses."
Big Mojo, a first-crop son of Shadwell sire Mohaather, suggested he might have some of the biggest sprinting prizes at his feet this season when running out the decisive winner of a competitive renewal of the Group 3 Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes at Ascot on Wednesday, on his three-year-old bow.
The stunning dark bay colt, trained by Mick Appleby for RP Racing, travelled powerfully behind the leaders before surging clear of his rivals to score by half a length.
Big Mojo is likely to contest the King Charles III Stakes over five furlongs at Royal Ascot, said Appleby.
“Training on is always a concern if you've got a decent two-year-old, but at home he'd been showing us he had,” he added. “He's been working really well against some of the older horses."
Big Mojo, bred by Ringfort Stud and The Ladies, was among the leading sprint two-year-olds last year, winning the Molecomb Stakes and finishing a neck second in the Flying Childers Stakes, as well as finishing fourth in the Gimcrack Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, not beaten far in either race.
Big Mojo is one of four black-type performers for Mohaather, along with Listed winners Merveilleux Lapin and Yah Mo Be There, and Rockfel Stakes runner-up Serving With Style.
The sire has been in cracking form of late, having also notched two exciting new winners in Britain. Dr Strangelove flew from the clouds to score on debut at Kempton for Paul and Oliver Cole, and Arkinthestars bolted up by eight and a half lengths at Ripon for Karl Burke.
Mohaather, a Group winner at two, three and four whose finest hour came when demolishing a high-class Sussex Stakes field.
