Mohaather's Big Mojo wins the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes
A second black-type success for the first season sire, this time at Glorious Goodwood
Shadwell’s exciting first-season sire Mohaather supplied his second black-type winner on one of the biggest stages in racing when son Big Mojo struck in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday.
Mohaather is also the source of Listed Rose Bowl Stakes scorer Yah Mo Be There and now boasts a brilliant 6.9% strike-rate of stakes winners to runners, the best figure among this year’s freshmen in Europe.
Big Mojo was breaking his maiden in the Molecomb, having finished a promising second on debut at Beverley. The Mick Appleby-trained colt travelled powerfully throughout the race and showed tremendous class and determination to score by three quarters of a length in two-year-old course record time.
Silvestre de Sousa, who partnered him to victory, reported: “It's great, Big Mojo is an exciting horse and he's improved a lot since his debut. It's a nice way to break a maiden, in a Group 3 race, and he's a pro horse.
“He's only going to improve. He's got a lot of speed and I would like him over six furlongs as well. He's a quality horse going forward, he's strong physically but mentally he's still not quite there yet.”
Big Mojo was bred by Ringfort Stud and The Ladies and is the first foal out of the Listed-placed No Nay Never mare Jm Jackson. He was purchased by Quirke Bloodstock and his owner RP Racing for 175,000gns from the Ringfort Stud draft at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale.
