Mohaather's Big Mojo wins the Group 1 Sprint Cup
“Everything went to plan, it took William Buick half the track to pull him up.”
Mohaather’s top-class first-crop son Big Mojo gained a deserved first Group 1 victory when surging to success in the Haydock Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday, setting a new course record.
Big Mojo has been a fine advertisement for his sire. A standout individual, he was sold to Quirke Bloodstock and RP Racing for 175,000gns at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale.
Trained by Mick Appleby, he broke his maiden in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and finished a neck second in the Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes later at two. He has also won the Gr.3 Commonwealth Cup Trial at Ascot and finished a neck second in the July Cup this year at three.
His top-level triumph at the weekend came in an ultra-competitive renewal of the Haydock Sprint Cup, with last year’s British Champions Sprint hero Kind Of Blue a length and a quarter in second and other Group 1 winners Lazzat, Inisherin, Time For Sandals and No Half Measures all further behind.
“He's gone and proved he's still at the top,” said Appleby after the race. “Everything went to plan, it took William Buick half the track to pull him up.”
Mohaather, who stands under the Shadwell banner at Beech House Stud, has also supplied Listed winners Merveilleux Lapin and Yah Mo Be There and Rockfel Stakes runner-up Serving With Style. His second crop of two-year-olds includes the well-entered Cape Orator and Summer Is Tomorrow, who have won valuable races at Deauville and Roscommon respectively.
His third crop of yearlings are available to purchase at this season’s sales.
Incidentally, Big Mojo was bred by Ringfort Stud and the Ladies. He is the second Haydock Sprint Cup winner bred by Ringfort Stud after Minzaal, who stands at Derrinstown Stud and whose first yearlings have been in strong demand at auction in recent weeks.
