Awtaad's Son Anmaat takes the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan
A notable top-level success for Shadwell and the Derrinstown based sire
Shadwell’s own Anmaat maintained his wonderfully consistent record with a thrilling victory over a top-class field in the Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp on Monday.
The Owen Burrows-trained five-year-old, who has yet to finish out of the top three in 12 starts, was recording his first success at Group 1 level.
“Anmaat is pretty laid back about life so he’ll never win by a couple of lengths,” said his in-form handler, also on the mark with Shadwell homebred Hukum in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown last week.
“He doesn’t show a huge amount at home but he’s incredibly tough. The ground was as quick as we’d want to go in today but he doesn’t half travel, even on this ground.”
Anmaat, who was providing Shadwell with their first victory in the prestigious Prix d’Ispahan, could potentially head to the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot or the Eclipse at Sandown.
Bred by Ringfort Stud, he is a fine advertisement for his sire Awtaad, who stands under the Shadwell banner at Derrinstown Stud and has established himself as one of the best budget sires around.
The Irish 2,000 Guineas-winning son of Cape Cross has supplied 13 black-type performers in total, with Group 2 Prix Chaudenay winner Al Qareem and high-class fillies Bellosa, Create Belief and Primo Bacio among his other standout performers.
Awtaad also holds the respect of the market, as shown by his yearling average of around 40,000gns and median of 35,000gns in Britain and Ireland last year, with highs of 120,000gns, €90,000 and €87,000 paid for his most in-demand offerings. Meanwhile his broodmare prospects also reached 600,000gns, 300,000gns and 200,000gns.
All of which makes the stallion unbeatable value at his covering fee of just €5,000 this year.
