Ebor 1-2 seals superb spell for Awtaad
His great run also includes two new Stakes winners, Naomi Lapaglia and Thalara
A one-two in the Ebor at York on Saturday sealed a superb spell for Derrinstown Stud sire Awtaad.
Ethical Diamond, a five-year-old by Awtaad saddled by Willie Mullins, beat his Henry de Bromhead-trained year-older paternal half-brother Ascending in Britain’s richest handicap, worth £300,000 to the winner and £90,000 to the runner-up.
Both horses had also scored in major handicaps at Royal Ascot this year, in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes and Ascot Stakes respectively.
Ethical Diamond was bred by William Kennedy out of the winning Areion mare Pearl Diamond and changed hands for 320,000gns at the Tattersalls July Sale of 2023.
Ascending was meanwhile bred by Karis Bloodstock and Rathbarry Stud out of the Group 3-placed Night Shift mare Midnight Martini. He was bought by current connections for 100,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale.
Awtaad was also on the mark at the York Ebor meeting as the broodmare sire of two-year-old Lifeplan, who stayed unbeaten with a determined victory in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes.
The Classic-winning son of Cape Cross is also the sire of two mares who have won Listed races in Ireland in recent weeks.
Naomi Lapaglia, who had seven stakes placings to her name, gained a much-deserved first black-type success in the Hurry Harriet Stakes at Gowran Park for trainer Ger Lyons and owner Eleanora Kennedy.
She is another good advert for the resale value of her sire’s produce, as she was bought by Gaelic Bloodstock for 475,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls December Sale.
Thalara, who had finished third in Listed company three times this year for De Bromhead, got her well-earned upper-case black type with a wide-margin victory in the Ruby Stakes at Killarney.
She was bred by Swordlestown Little Stud out of the winning Suave Dancer mare Third Dimension and carries the silks of the farm's Mariann Klay.
Awtaad, also the source of top-level winners Anmaat and Anisette, is widely recognised as one of the best bargains in the stallion ranks. He stood at a fee of just €7,500 this year.
