The first of many - Baaeed foal makes a splash at JRA Select Sale

Cosmo View Farm Ltd signed the docket at ¥56,000,000

The first public auction offering by Shadwell’s homebred champion Baaeed sold on Tuesday for the equivalent of £271,265/€320,875.

The February born colt was sold during the foal session of the prestigious Japan Racing Horse Association’s Select Sale in Hokkaido, where Cosmo View Farm Ltd signed the docket at ¥56,000,000.

The youngster was bred and consigned by Paca Paca Farm, who secured the dam, North American Gr.3 winner Fahan Mura, for $450,000 at Fasig-Tipton in November 2019. Fahan Mura, who shares her pedigree with Gr.1 winners Pirate’s Revenge, US champion two-year-old filly Sweet Catomine and her Breeders’ Cup-winning full-sister Life Is Sweet, was among the 162 blue-chip mares in Baaeed’s limited debut book.

Prior to Tuesday’s sale Paca Paca Farm owner Harry Sweeney admitted he was “torn” about selling such a high-quality youngster. “He was a mature, good-sized colt on arrival and has done very well since,” said Sweeney. “ Currently he has good size and scope, is very pleasing to the eye and is being well received on the farm. He has a great temperament and we believe he will handle the sales experience well.”

He added: “Baaeed was a champion and six-time Gr.1 winner on turf and is a very exciting sire. I was particularly impressed that most of his Gr.1 wins were at a mile, and I believe this colt will have the speed required to be a racing success in Japan.”

Baaeed’s first crop was bred at £80,000, meaning the first foal to change hands on the public market has brought over three times that introductory fee.
