Awtaad - Ireland's best value sire?
"Awtaad’s second elite winner was Anisette, who was eased down to win the Gr.1 Del Mar Oaks in August by two and a half lengths."
Derrinstown Stud resident Awtaad confirmed himself one of the best value sires in Europe by supplying two top-flight winners and a host of other high-class performers in 2023.
The son of Cape Cross’s first Gr.1 winner of the year was Anmaat, who beat big-race mainstays Light Infantry and Facteur Cheval to take the Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp in May.
Anmaat has also won Gr.2 and Gr.3 races, and has never finished out of the first three in 12 starts. His career earnings stand at just shy of £440,000.
Awtaad’s second elite winner was Anisette, who was eased down to win the Gr.1 Del Mar Oaks in August by two and a half lengths. She also scored in the Gr.2 San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar by a wide margin and ran second in the Gr.2 Rodeo Drive Stakes and Gr.3 Autumn Miss Stakes.
Anisette is another wonderfully consistent performer by her sire, having won four times, finished second twice and fourth once in all her starts.
Awtaad’s other flag bearers in 2023 were Gr.3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes and Listed Stand Cup winner Al Qareem and Australian black-type scorers Diamil and Maktoob.
His stock remains immensely popular at horses in training sales, as shown by Harold Kirk and Willie Mullins’ purchase of easy Limerick maiden winner Ethical Diamond for 320,000gns at Tattersalls in July.
